The BG News has errors. Like all newspapers, it sometimes misspells words, uses poor grammar or has an occasional factual error. However, because it is an entirely student-driven paper, it is, unfortunately, more prone to mistakes than the average publication. This is the impression many have of the 86-year-old paper.
But what they don’t know is that among journalists, The BG News is considered one of the best student newspapers in the country, even the world. It is a collaborative effort involving around 100 students and publishes 9,500 copies five days a week. It has a long history of initiating change on campus and has won numerous regional, national and international awards throughout its history.
There is simply no way to get this information to the entire student body without preparing a formal introduction. Here is a 15-minute video documentary entitled, “The Best Source in News: Your Student Paper,” which covers the history and operations of the paper in detail, as well as interviews with industry notables.
By the end of the film, viewers will understand how the paper operates, its history, and how it’s thought of among journalists across the country.
