Sam Harris debates Reza Aslan about the role of religion in contemporary society, its role in terrorism, and more specifically Islamic terrorism.
Being a fan of Harris, I was dissapointed to find his notions about religion's role quite juvenile; he clearly exagerates it and ignores far deeper strife, and nowhere is it seen more clearly than when he proclaims that religious disagreement is the cause of both the Israeli-Arab conflict and of the sectarian violence in Iraq. He couldn't have been more wrong.
Apart from that, Reza does come across as a religious apologist, however his undertanding of the underlying causes and motives are far more scholarly than those of Harris. The bottom line is, I would have to award Reza the "victory", if only for better scholarship.
Nonetheless, when it comes to religion in general, both of Sam's books are highly recommended.
