Day-O: The Music of Irving Burgie. Irving Burgie (pronounced: Bur-gee) is best known as the composer of such classic Calypso songs as "Day-O" and "Jamaica Farewell." Burgie composed eight of the songs on Harry Belafonte's ground-breaking 1956 album, "Calypso," which was the first album in the United States to sell over one million copies. Irving Burgie went on to write another twenty-eight songs for Harry Belafonte. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of "Day-O." Nina & Frederick, Patty Page, Mantovani, Michiko Hamumura, Julio Iglesias, Marty Franklin, and Catarina Valente are among the artists who have recorded the music of Irving Burgie. Additional songs by Burgie, including "The Seine," "El Matador," "The Wanderer," and "Wish You Were Here" were recorded by such folk acts as The Kingston Trio, Jimmy Buffett and Miriam Makeba. Irving Burgie composed music for the Twentieth Century Fox film, "Island in the Sun" including the title song. In 1988 Burgie's music was featured in Tim Burton's hit movie, "Beetlejuice." In 2004, Burgie recorded the CD, "The Father of Modern Calypso." In 1983, Burgie received an award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Cherry Lane Music for his songs having sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
