This video is a day in the life of Andy, a TEFL teacher from i-to-i who lives on the grounds of a Buddhist Temple in Sri Lanka.
Early in the morning Andy wakes up and the first thing he takes a Sri Lankan shower. This is a funny story, as he relays how it went his first time around. After brushing his teeth he heads down to breakfast, which consists of rice and curry. This is one of many rice and curry meals he will eat while in his stay at the temple.
His mornings are generally spent planning for the days lessons, where he teaches two lessons, four days a week. His classes are basically divided based on skill level. He makes sure that his classes are structured around an idea he learned in his i-to-i TEFL course which is, “Ask and they remember, tell and they forget.” This idea makes the classes much more interactive. Andy explains how he has had the most success using lessons that are put in the context of the Sri Lankan societal norms.
After class he takes full advantage of the amazing opportunity to be living at a Buddhist temple, and spends time with the monks. He says most of their time together is playing chess or telling each other jokes, but he has actually learned to meditate and has since incorporated it into his life.
On the weekends, he heads into town to meet up with other western volunteers. He says this is a crucial to the experience, as being so culturally isolated can be exhausting and you need someone your age who speaks your own language to bounce ideas and frustrations off. The video concludes with Andy and his friends attending a party on a beautiful beach. This video is a day in the life of Andy, a TEFL teacher from i-to-i who lives on the grounds of a Buddhist Temple in Sri Lanka.
