Crestview, Florida---Lightning set off a fire that destroyed the home of Oswald Alford in the Brooke Estates sub-division around 5:15 Thursday afternoon. Over a dozen firefighters from North Okaloosa, Crestview, and the Dorcas fire departments battled the blaze that was encouraged by high winds due to the strong thunder storms that rolled in to the area. At times, flames from the fire reached over 50 feet into the air. While North Okaloosa deputy fire chief Danny Worrells fought the blaze from inside the home, North Okaloosa Fire Chief Ed Cutler and Crestview Assistant Fire Chief Ralph Everage teamed up and carefully directed the operations from outside.
With lightning continually flashing across the sky around them the fire fighters never gave into the blaze and many of them, hot and exhausted emerged from the home only long enough to exchange emptied oxygen tanks for fresh ones before stepping back into the fight.
Okaloosa County Emergency Medical personnel were on scene the entire time to assist the firefighters checking vital signs and treating symptoms of dehydration.Crestview, Florida---Lightning set off a fire that destroyed the home of Oswald Alford in the Brooke Estates sub-division around 5:15 Thursd...all »Crestview, Florida---Lightning set off a fire that destroyed the home of Oswald Alford in the Brooke Estates sub-division around 5:15 Thursday afternoon.
