Illinois International, Global Diaspora
30:40  - 2 years ago
Immigration issues, both legal and illegal, have assumed a position of prominence in our political lexicon, particularly as the nation looks toward its 2008 presidential election. As compelling as the national political debates over the efficacy of an expanded immigration policy have become, however, these issues tend to resonate most powerfully at regional and local levels throughout the Midwest, Illinois and Champaign County. Immigration issues tend to coalesce around several key points. Particularly, what the difference in impact is, if any, between legal and illegal immigration as it relates to: 1) local economies, job markets and workforces; 2) their respective social costs; and 3) the obligations of local communities for ensuring the smooth transition of immigrants, legal or illegal, into the broader US society. All these issues will be explored in this episode of the program.
