History - Orem Utah
01:12  - 3 years ago
Orem UT - Orem was organized in 1919 and named after Walter C. Orem, president of the Salt Lake and Utah Electric Interurban Railroad that ran through the community. The city was originally settled as a farming community with widespread orchards and other commercially grown produce. There was even a cannery to process the harvests with the railroad providing service from the farmers to the statewide market. The landscape of Orem has undergone many changes in the last 87 years; in the early 1940s, Geneva Steel Works was constructed by the federal government as an inland producer of steel. Today, the steel plant is being demolished and a 1500 acre mixed-use community is being planned for the property. Many of Orem’s orchards have given way to new development, such as shopping centers and malls. Perhaps the most significant evolution to Orem was most likely caused by the city's development as a center of computer technology. WordPerfect Corporation, was founded in Orem and provided the catalyst for Orem to become a technology- development center. Today, Orem is home to 236 high-tech companies.
