Military - Pensacola FL With the annexation of Florida by the United States in 1822, a string of military forts and bases was established to protect the coastlines and cities. Officials soon recognized the area s extensive lumber resources, and Gulf of Mexico location made Pensacola an ideal location for a navy yard.
The advent of naval aviation brought the need for good weather training sites. The now abandoned base, located on the shore of Pensacola Bay, was ideal for the Navy s seaplanes. In 1914, a small contingent of officers and enlisted men disembarked from the USS Mississippi and USS Orion to set up a flying school at the derelict yard on the edge of the bay. In 1917, Pensacola was designated as the Navy s first Naval Air Station.
As the years progressed, there were many changes and advances in aircraft design. With each of the World Wars, the role aviation played grew in importance, and Pensacola N-A-S grew along with it. Today, Naval Air Station Pensacola is still the hub of naval aviation. The initial training of all naval aviators begins here, whether at Aviation Officer's Candidate School, or through aviation preflight indoctrination.
In 1946, the Navy established its Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels. Now based in Pensacola, this team s acrobatic maneuvers demonstrate the importance of precision flight and teamwork, while entertaining millions of spectators around the world.
As a testimonial to all that this cradle of naval aviation has meant to the nation, the National Museum of Naval Aviation celebrates the storied past of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps pilots who trained at Pensacola.Military - Pensacola FL With the annexation of Florida by the United States in 1822, a string of military forts and bases was established to...all »Military - Pensacola FL With the annexation of Florida by the United States in 1822, a string of military forts and bases was established to protect the coastlines and cities.
