Project_240: Drift research using a Nissan 240SX vehicle of science
01:16  - 4 years ago
The dynamics of drifting are subject to numerous nonlinearities stemming from tire force dependencies on lateral slip, longitudinal slip, loading condition, surface condition, and even track temperature. Rather than studying drifting analytically, Project_240 uses a vehicle testbed to perform drifting experiments and measure the intertial, position, and control input data during the maneuvers. These data are used to generate neural-network models describing the vehicle dynamics, especially with respect to relation of distributed acceleration sensing to sideslip estimation. The video presents some basic drift tests at the Gainesville International Raceway test track and includes various forms of data presented concurrently with the drift video. The slalom portion of the video towards the end shows the implications of balancing the stabilizing moment throughout the drift and how a simple series of control inputs can easily be turned into a satisfying 360 degree spin maneuver. Clearly, drifting is a source of excellence. This video is the low-quality WMV version.
