Influence of aquaculture on the content of beneficial and detrimental fatty acid

Abstract: I performed fatty acid analyses to identify the correlation between fish fatty acids, western diets, and inflammatory diseases. I recorded and manipulated Gas Chromatography data for different samples, and performed various statistical studies on the results. During the fall semester, 2006, I worked with a graduate student to find an in-vivo leukotriene measurement assay, to measure the leukotriene levels in the urine samples from the individuals on trial. Following that, during my January term, I worked on an independent project to study the change in gene expression in mononuclear cells from individuals receiving borage and fish oil supplements, using RT-PCR (Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction) and Real-time PCR. I am still working on that project and hope to find a useful set of information in the near future.
