Nick Rossino Barium Swallow
00:38  - 3 years ago
The important thing to note when wathcing the video is the point after the swallow... I was drinking a liquid barium mix (so that it shows up on the machine). After I finish drinking it, some of it will not be swallowed automatically. Instead, it just sorto f leaks down the back of my throat and pools up. This is the area directly above my airway. In this instance, it doesn't get into my airway, but it has an irritating effect. Normally the food would be swallowed pretty quickly and wouldn't leave much residue... but since it pools, more stuff gets left behind. Some residue may be left at the entrance to my airway. In the second swallow, if you pause it you can see where it starts to fill up over the little edge. That is the tip of my airway. Obviously, with a thinner liquid (i.e. water), it would be more viscous and move more easily than the barium liquid. Sticky liquids, however, are the worst. I guess when it pools up in that area, the sticky residue left by something like soda feels very uncomfortable. We have still yet to find a cause, but I am interested in the dark area around the adams apple (its the half circle below my jaw that moves when I swallow). I was told this is dried up gunk from the pooling/leaking effect going on.... but you know, now I am questioning that. It appears to be pretty far forward...
