This show takes us to a lake in South Miami-Dade to fish with the legendary Captain Jim Anson for Butterfly Peacock Bass. A native of the Amazon River basin, peacock bass were introduced to South Florida waters in 1984. Over twenty thousand were released into lakes and canals to help control the burgeoning population of exotic fishes such as the spotted tilapia. Because of their sensitivity to cold, South Florida is the only place in the contiguous United States that they have been successfully stocked. In fact, they cannot survive any further north than Broward County. We started out today at Kendall Bait & Tackle to pick up some shiners before heading out to the private residential suburban lake. Captain Jim is an experienced light tackle tournament angler. He has been fishing South Florida waters for over 30 years. He has personally caught more than 32 IGFA certified world records. He is widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable fishermen in the world. Anson has won the Master Angler Award in the Metropolitan South Florida Fishing Tournament three times. This is the largest tournament in the world, running five months and attracting 50,000 entries a year. The Master Angler award is the most difficult award to win in fishing. It recognizes the top overall fisherman during the tournament's run. It requires the capture of trophy sized fish on a variety of tackles including flyrod, spinning rod, and baitcasting rods all without natural baits, as well as light tackle down to 6 pound test line. Since Peacock Bass are sport fish and not edible, Carlos decides to make one of his favorite fish recipes at home for our viewers.
