Friends,
Last week we returned from a trip to Jordan to see firsthand the horrors that the U.S. occupation of Iraq is causing in the region. We met with Iraqi refugees, Iraqi Parliamentarians, Iraqi doctors and professionals, Jordanian officials and United Nations staff, to learn about the humanitarian crisis among Iraqi refugees in Jordan and Syria, and the situation of the Internally Displaced in Iraq.
Our goal is to begin linking the struggle of Iraqis to return to their homes and lives, to the struggle of Hurricane Katrina survivors, who are also designated as Internally Displaced Persons by the United Nations.
Today is the two year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The Hip Hop Caucus, in leading the Gulf Coast Renewal Campaign, has worked tirelessly for justice for Katrina survivors. After experiencing the pitiful response by the Progressive community to the injustices of Katrina, the Hip Hop Caucus took on a new challenge: to better link the movements for peace and for justice in the U.S.
Our Make Hip Hop Not War Tour was our first project with that goal. Our Juneteenth Concert with dead prez and Mystic about shutting down Guantanamo and stopping torture was our next. We are now looking into beginning an Iraqi Refugee Project.
The situation of Iraqis and Katrina survivors are eerily similar as it relates to jobs, health care, police brutality, discrimination, and education. And, as we see it, the Bush administration is the most responsible for the death and suffering of Gulf Coast residents and the Iraqi people.
We hope to keep you more regularly updated on our work as we continue to link the struggles of oppressed peoples around the world.
Below you can learn about actions that you can take today on behalf of Iraqis and Katrina Survivors.
