Huge ingots, weighing many tons, are brought to required temperature in "soaking pits" and rolled into preliminary shapes in the blooming mill. The Universal plate mill, where slabs are rolled into cover plates for columns. Once the rolling is completed, the plate passes on to the cooling tables. Beam and Column Finishing Mill. The roughing stand of the finishing mill rolls the shape to the desired size for the intermediate stand. Final rolling is then done. The finished product is then sent to the American Bridge Company's fabricating shop at Ambridge, Pa.
