Mercedes Alejandro is coordinator for Familias Hispanas del ARC, a support group sponsored by the ARC of Greater Houston (organization which works to include all children and adults with cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities in every community) for Spanish-speaking families with special needs children. Mercedes is also President of Parents for Public Schools, a group advocating the continued success of children in public schools and training for parents on school related legislation. She is the recipient of the national Jefferson Award for public service.
