Heart Disease and Women - Mayland Health Today
26:36  - 2 years ago
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, just as it is for men. In this interview, Dr. Myung Park, a cardiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, discusses symptoms and treatment for heart disease in women. Women often experience heart disease symptoms later in life than men when they may have other risk factors including high blood pressure and obesity. Diagnosis is important. Besides the “classic” heart attack symptoms of chest tightness and arm pain, women may also experience nausea/vomiting, overwhelming fatigue, dizziness, jaw pain and anxiety. Women are also more likely to have blockages in the smaller arteries around the heart, which may affect the treatment. In this program, Dr. Park also discusses the importance of heart disease prevention and the role of exercise, weight control, blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking cessation. The second half of the show is devoted to pulmonary hypertension, a condition that affects twice as many women as men. With pulmonary hypertension, there is continuous high blood pressure in the arteries leading to the lungs, which causes shortness of breath with activity, tiredness, dizziness, palpitations, chest pain, leg swelling and fainting. Dr. Park explains how pulmonary hyptertension is diagnosed and treated, including research into new medications.
