Soapy Smith Night 2006
07:41  - 3 years ago
The Magic Castle, in conjunction with the School for Scoundrels, throws a big 1890's Gold Rush costume bash every July 8 in honor of the greatest con man of the Nineteenth century, Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith. Soapy ran the town of Skagway, Alaska during the height of the Gold Rush with his gang of more than 100 skilled and experienced confidence men. He was killed in a gunfight with Frank Reid on July 8, 1898. We drink a "toast to Soapy's Ghost" in the spirit of fun and fellowship, and raise lots of money for the Vernon Fund (which aids magicians in health or finiancial difficulties) by stripping everyone who comes into the Magic Castle that night of every dime we can, with three-card monte and shell games and faro. It is a blast. This video is from the 2006 event, and features the wonderful music from Professor Dave Bourne's saloon piano. Dave was the Gem's piano player on Deadwood. The Old West lives again!
