Rugby. Oldham St Annes v Golborne Parkside
08:47  - 2 years ago
Oldham St Annes 12 Golborne Parkside 28 Golborne travelled in icy fog and were greeted by a warm sunny day in Oldham. The game was fiercely contested by both teams, defensively both were equal, it was only a few touches of individual class which divided the teams. St Annes started the game with the sun at their backs and soon took advantage from the first set of six, full back Drury lost a high ball in the sun and the Oldham number 4 crashed through for a converted try. Golborne responded on twenty minutes moving the ball at speed from the left hand corner, across the field for Timmins to go in at the right hand corner for an unconverted try. Drury stepped up on thirty minutes with his first try of the day, picking up the ball from acting half on the half way line, he somehow evaded all around him, stepping in and out of would be tacklers he accelerated and rounded the full back to score between the posts, Arkwright converting. The Oldham team responded on the stroke of half time with a high ball to the corner, the number 5 out jumping the smallest player on the field Timmins. Leaving the scores level at 10 each at the break. Early in the second half St Annes were awarded a penalty just inside the Golborne half, which was well struck by the Stand Off to make the score 12-10. Golborne came back quickly adding another try in the corner from Timmins again from quick hands across the line. On the hour Golborne’s centre Craig Parr was rewarded for his hard work in both attack and defence with a powerful try, taking a short ball ten yards out, it would have taken a twelve bore to stop him scoring. St Annes constantly assaulted the Golborne line, only to be held out on every attack. With eight minutes remaining, full back Drury picked up a kick through on his own line and immediately counter attacked leaving the opposition behind and going the length of the field for a brilliant individual try. Golborne’s regular full back this season, Ben Dickinson must have seen this as a challenge, scoring an equally good try, supporting a break by the evergreen Tony Bligh he took the ball on half way and outstripped the opposition for the final score of the game in the corner. Once again three of last years under 18’s team starred, a special mention for Marcus Beham, stepping in at the last minute for his Golborne debut.
