Teaching via iChat
02:19  - 2 years ago
Mr. Devyatkin, a middle school science teacher, had a surgery and taught lessons from his home by using iChat. The general topic of the lesson was Layers of the Atmosphere and students used three or more sources (websites and texts) to gather information and form data table and organize the information into categories. There was also a miscellaneous category for additional interesting facts or stories they wanted to include. A full-color large chart was then created using this data table. This allowed each student to visualize the concepts and to make the numbers and facts more comprehensive through the graphic medium. In designing the chart, representing complex ideas and changes in the atmosphere with altitude, such as temperature, pressure, composition and physical and chemical properties they have the opportunity to assimilate this important material in the process of creating the chart. Students will also be allowed to refer to their own charts during an upcoming quiz. After conducting several iChat sessions with his students, Mr. Devyatkin realized that students don't treat the image on the screen the same way they do a live teacher. He began to learn the limitations of this system, especially the visual clarity and range of the audio. Knowing this, Mr. Devyatkin started asking the class questions and called on kids directly. The substitute teacher stood near the computer to interpret what students said if the audio was too poor.
