A Nation Among Nations: America's Place in the World
1:00:36  - 5 years ago
On this installment of "Books of Our Time" Lawrence R. Velvel, Dean of the Massachusetts School of Law, interviews Thomas Bender. Bender is Professor of History at New York University and his recent book "A Nation Among Nations: America’s Place in World History" will be the subject of the interview. The nation, argues Bender, cannot be its own historical context. In order to increase understanding of major events in American history, historical inquiry must be expanded to the examination of global events. American history must be reframed and its history must be seen as part of a larger international story. America’s triumphs and travails have been shaped by decisions, people, and trends from all corners of the globe. It is imperative that scholars, educators and students of history come together to recognize and discuss the importance of transnational history, a history without borders. The Massachusetts School of Law, located in Andover, Massachusetts, makes high quality, affordable legal education available to less privileged persons who are traditionally excluded from the legal profession. As part of its mission of providing high quality education and information for both law students and the general public, the Massachusetts School of Law also presents information on important current affairs to the general public via television and radio broadcasts, an intellectual journal, conferences, author appearances, blogs and books.
