Former Defense Department analyst Daniel Ellsberg, best known for leaking the so-called “Pentagon Papers” in 1971, delivered a speech at Maryknoll, N.Y. in November of 2006, “Avoiding The Next War: A Call For Civic Courage.” Ellsberg’s ‘whistle blowing’ is credited with helping end the Vietnam War.
Ellsberg says if he had the opportunity to do it again, he would have released the documents in 1964 to prevent the war and loss of American and Vietnamese lives.
This speech was delivered in the context of reports that the Bush administration has drawn up contingency plans for a large-scale assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons to bring about a regime change in Iran.
Ellsberg is now calling on administration, defense and intelligence insiders to go public with documents which would show the American people the implications of these plans, thus preventing a war that would compound the mistakes of Iraq with even more devastating results.
