CEPR Seminar 7: Horatio Alger is Dead
40:50  - 3 years ago
CEPR Economics Seminar Series: Basic Economics for Policy Analysis & Self Defense *** Horatio Alger is Dead *** One of our most cherished national beliefs is that the United States offers tremendous opportunities for economic mobility, that even the poorest citizens or the most recent immigrants have a chance to make it rich or, at least, acquire their own piece of the "American dream." In fact, economic mobility in the United States has never been that great. International comparisons of economic mobility, for example, consistently demonstrate that European economies offer their poor far better chances of upward mobility than we do. Recent analyses also suggest that the degree of upward mobility has been on the decline since the 1970s. This session will explore the realities of class mobility in America today. *** View Dr. Boushey's PowerPoint presentation here: http://www.cepr.net/seminars/powerpoints/2005_10_27.ppt
