9/11 2001 911 Dsei Part 1 Arms fair protest London Twin Towers hypocricy the protest march in 2001.
11:26  - 2 years ago
This is a home movie of the DSEI protest on September 11th 2001 in Canning Town, in London's Docklands. DSEI is an arms fair, filmed at the same time the first plane hit the Twin Towers in New York. As somebody who is opposed to all war I followed the procession of the march. We were not allowed within about a mile of the eXcel centre where the arms fair was held, but instead were coralled into an area on the side of the dock basin for several hours. Eeerily as we walked past the office towers of Canary Wharf I felt the urge to film an aeroplane justaposed against the towers. Little did I know that when I filmed this shot it would've been at almost exactly the very moment the first airliner hit the World Trade Center on the other side of the Atlantic. Even thought the police were using somewhat colonial policing tactics, refusing to allow us to leave the dock basin, there was something of a carnival atmosphere. However this was soon shattered as news of the events that were unfolding in New York began to filter through. The film stands as an interesting historical document. The demonstration would probably have hit the UK headlines if the events of 9/11 had not happened. To have had the opportunity to be campaigning for peace at the moment the world changed for the worse was quite profound. I am against all war, both externally in the world, and also internally. I want people to be able to resolve all their internal conflict; the conflict of the mind. The events of 9/11, the war in Iraq, the possibility of war in Iran all reflect the internal conflicts in people that are not being fully addressed. The conflicts in the world are not natural. They are a reflection of a pathological sickness of humanity. I was at this protest against the global arms trade at the very moment a few highly egotistical quasi-religious fools, vainly posturing the servants of Allah wounded all of humanity! The evangelical crusade of Bush and Blair; two equally egotistical quasi-religious idiots, against al Quaeda in the years since perfectly mirrors the vain egotistical posturing of the terrorists! Their deeds, like the deeds of terrorists mirrors their internal pathology; the schizophrenic conflict within their minds, the voice of their egos telling them that they must somehow react, and that they must resume and perpetuate the sick cycle of war! Being able to express one's disgust at the egotism of all war at this protest at the very moment 9/11 happened was profound. Being present at the protest also proved to be an an epiphany in another way. This video is a preamble to illustrating this epiphany! My next post will present the somewhat hypocritical speech Dave Knight, the then chairman of UK CND gave. I was videoing his speech at the very moment he announced to the crowd that the towers had been hit by the two planes. His somewhat knee jerk reaction illustrates the hypocricy of some people; and especially the politicians within the peace movement, who regard their political life of greater import to the the sanctity of human life. The reactionary speech that I am about to post mirrors that of the politicans, like Bush and Blair. Dave Knight's ego got in the way of him having any empathy for the victims of 9/11 at the moment it happened. Whilst the pro military-industrial-complex egotism of Bush and Blair negate any real empathy for the victims of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Dave Knight's speech illustrated how the same kind of negation can occur within a socialist or (so-called) 'anarchistic' context. His speech showed how in many respects the anti-capitalist, socialist or anarchistic egos of a left wing politician can prevent them from having empathy for the innocent victims of such a brutal and violent tragedies as 9/11.
