Social critic, Betty Friedan, is best known for her blockbuster book, THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE, which launched the women’s movement of the l960’s. This video includes a comprehensive biography of Ms Friedan along with her zesty accounts of how this society’s views of aging are outmoded. She offers cogent suggestions on how social systems should change to assure that the entire life cycle for everyone is more meaningful and productive. Betty Friedan combines this expanded vision with her earlier work on role expectations for women.
“If we could get into our consciousness, and we haven’t yet, that we are going to live this eighty year life span, then we could relax more. We can do an awful lot of things and we don’t have to do it all at once. Family, career and children...they are pieces of a complex life that have to be put together in new and diverse ways,” she said in conclusion to this video, which is part of a series on lifespan and aging, including films with Paul and Marget Baltes, Erik H. Erikson Joan Erikson and Marian Diamond.
