The current conflict in Oaxaca began on June 14, 2006 when the governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz (URO) sent in state police to break a teachers' strike that was camped out in the center of Oaxaca City. URO had already alarmed international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, for atrocities committed since his election in 2004. The actions on June 14th further ignited people’s anger throughout the State who responded, by forming the People's Popular Assembly of Oaxaca (APPO) who reinforced the teachers' encampment in Oaxaca City. As a result of this popular movement many women became involved in the struggle, many women who before had never been politically active. Their activism took many forms including maintaining nighttime barricades throughout the city to protect neighborhoods from UROs armed thugs. Last August 5,000 women organized and took over the State radio and TV station, Channel 9. Channel 9 had been operating as the official mouthpiece for URO. The women broadcasted for three weeks on both TV and Radio until the transmitter was destroyed by UROs men. The Rebellion of the Oaxaqueñas tells the story of these women, who came from many different realities but united in a common struggle that affected them all.
