Brownsville TX - The Brownsville/Matamoros(Mat-ah-mohr-os) Foreign Trade Zone is the largest general purpose trade zone in the United States. Brownsville, as a port of entry with its seaport, airport, railroad and vehicular bridge crossings, plays an important part in International commerce between the United States and Mexico. The North American Free Trade Agreement has sparked a boom in the Brownsville economy. The maquiladora,(mahk-ee-la-dohr-ah) or twin plant, concept of manufacturing, with labor-intensive work done in Mexico where labor is cheaper, coupled with support facilities on the U.S. side, plays a significant role for the region’s employment picture. More than 55,000 workers in the Brownsville/Matamoros region are employed in these maquiladora businesses. With more than 230 sunshine filled days a year, Brownsville boasts a multi-million dollar agriculture industry. Perhaps best known is the citrus industry; grapefruit has the distinction of being redder, sweeter, and juicier than those grown in other parts of the country. Texas oranges are also known for their juiciness and low-acid content. The shrimping industry pumps an average of $60 million dollars a year into Brownsville's economy, and indirectly contributes to the creation of thousands of jobs throughout the community. The Brownsville shrimp fleet, along with that of Port Isabel, makes our area the Shrimp Capital of the United States.
