In 1969, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) was founded to campaign against the commercial seal hunt in Canada. In the 1980s IFAW was instrumental in securing a series of major victories. These led to a ban on whitecoat (newborn harp seal) and blueback (young hooded seal) pelts into Europe. As a result, the number of seals killed was drastically reduced.
The hunt, however, did not end thanks to government subsidies. IFAW continues to fight to save the seals by campaigning in Canada and bringing international journalists and politicians to the ice each year. We are also working to enact bans on all seal products across Europe.
Each day during IFAW's Seal Hunt Watch - which starts nears the end of March - our team of observers will bring you videos and podcasts of Canada's seal hunt straight from the ice. If it happens out here, you'll know about it.
