In the video Electromagnetic Toy Engine there were sparks between the cam and leaf contact. A spark suppression circuit (snubber) can stop the sparks. A possible circuit is to put a diode across the coil, back biased under normal operation, but forward for the back EMF. The problem with the diode is it makes the L/R time constant very long the effect is to degrade motor performance. You can hear the motor slowing down. Almost like a brake was being applied.
