klik2 Technology Preview
00:56  - 2 years ago
This is a preview of "klik2", which is currently under development. klik implements the "1 application == 1 file" paradigm for Linux end-user systems. klik allows you to download and run applications without a need for their "installation". This works independently from your specific distribution or package manager. A klik application is always contained in one single file, which represents a "Compressed Application Image". This image contains all required runtime resources like libraries, icons, data files.... The "klik2" client will generate this file for you, on-the-fly, from existing binary archives (that is, from traditional .rpm, .deb or .tgz software packages as provided by Linux distributions). And you can easily use a klik application on an RPM-based distro which contains "ingredient packages" that come out of the Debian .deb repositories! A ready-made klik application image file is dynamically mounted using FUSE when you run the application. Once mounted, its content files and directories are part of the system directory tree, and its embedded application can be run without a problem. Any ready-made klik application can be easily moved to a different location (or copied to USB stick, burned onto CD-RW), uploaded, mailed,... and used there. Removing it is easy too: just delete 1 file. klik brings "portable applications" to Linux. klik makes software virtualization go one step further: down to the level of individual applications.
