Softec Presents: Second Life - User-created Content - Social Networks
1:02:11  - 2 years ago
Second Life is a popular instance of a commercial, interactive, 3D "metaverse". Our discussion will explore "what works" in SL and examine how those points could apply to SLO area businesses and organizations. Possibilities include a wide range of interests: ecommerce, architecture, land resource management, education, personnel training, and telecommuting. In general, three strategies indicate directions for a generation of technology to follow the Microsoft desktop: Second Life (metaverse), Facebook (widget platform), Google/Yahoo/Netvibes (start pages). Concepts such as user-created content, social networks, and open platforms have enabled the successes of those strategies. However, with successes come new challenges: infrastructure scaling, business conflicts of interest, technical hurdles, over-reported numbers, and a wide range of legal issues. We will explore these issues by looking examples in SL from well-known companies: IBM, Reuters, Sears, etc. We will contrast those with examples from competing "metaverse" spaces (Viacom, Ogoglio) plus competing platforms (Facebook). We will cover a few interesting books on the subject, plus notable blogs and other resources.
